Does the Arc S support video calling?

No, the Arc S only supports 'Video Chat' rather than video calling.

Video Chat is only supported through apps such as Skype and Google Chat and is different than video calling through wifi.


 

Apps - How do I manage my Apps?

You'll need to setup/sign in to a Googlemail account to be able to use Google Play  to download Apps.

How do I add a App?

  1. Tap the Main menu icon
  2. Tap Play Store
  3. Tap the App you wish to download

If it's a free App,

  1. Tap Install
  2. Tap OK

If it's a chargable App,

  1. Tap Buy
  2. Tap OK
  3. Tap Select payment method and select your payment method
  4. Insert your payment details, then tap Buy now
  5. Your App will now be downloaded in the background, to check this, tap, hold and slide down the top of the screen (while downloading you will a flashing arrow in the top left of the screen)
  6. You will see on this screen all the Apps you have been or are being downloaded.
  7. Tap, hold and slide up the bottom of the screen to return to the Play Store.

How do I delete an App?

  1. Tap the Main menu icon
  2. Tap Play Store
  3. Tap Downloads
  4. Tap the App you wish to Delete
  5. Tap Uninstall
  6. Tap OK to the Uninstall application message
  7. Tap one of the reason you wish to remove the App, then tap OK.
  8. The App will now be uninstalled.


 

Apps - How do I report a problem with an App?

To report a problem with an App,

  1. Tap the Main menu icon
  2. Tap Play Store
  3. Tap Downloads
  4. Tap and Hold the App you have the issue with
  5. Tap Details
  6. Scroll down the page until you see About the Developer and Market content
  7. You can now either email the developer about your issue or Flag as inappropriate to Market Place.


 

Bluetooth - How do I turn my Bluetooth on and make my phone visable to other devices?

To turn on your Bluetooth,

  1. Tap the Main menu icon
  2. Tap Settings
  3. Tap Wireless & network
  4. Tap Bluetooth so a tick appears next to it
  5. Tap Bluetooth settings
  6. Tap Discoverable, so other devices in the area can see your phone (this will only be for 2 minutes).

To change your phones Bluetooth name,

  1. Tap the Main menu icon
  2. Tap Settings
  3. Tap Wireless & network
  4. Tap Bluetooth so a tick appears next to it
  5. Tap Bluetooth settings 
  6. Tap Device name
  7. Tap the text box and enter your new name then tap OK.


 

Bluetooth - How do I transfer files via Bluetooth?

To transfer files via Bluetooth,  first make sure your Bluetooth is turned on and if your receiving the files make sure it's Discoverable (see, Bluetooth - How do I turn my Bluetooth on and make my phone visable to other devices?.)

To send a Music, Video or Photo file,

  1. Tap the Main menu icon
  2. Tap either Music or Gallery
  3. Tap the file you wish to Bluetooth
  4. Press the Menu key
  5. Tap Share
  6. Tap Bluetooth
  7. The phone will now search for any nearby phones that have their Bluetooth switched on
  8. Tap the phone name you wish to send the file to
  9. Your phone will now connect to the other phone and send the file. 

Receiving a file,

  1. You should receive a message from the other phone asking you to Accept the file
  2. Tap Accept if you wish to recieve it
  3. Your phone will now download the file from the other phone.


 

Contacts - How do I copy numbers from my SIM to my phone?

To copy numbers from SIM to phone,

  1. Tap Phone
  2. Tap Contacts
  3. Press the Menu key
  4. Tap Import contacts
  5. Tap SIM card
  6. Tap the contacts you wish to Import or press the Menu key and Tap Select all.

This phone does not support transfering numbers stored on the phone to your SIM.


 

Data Roaming - How do I switched off/on data roaming?

To check that your data connection is switched off whilst your aboard,

  1. Press the Menu key
  2. Tap Settings
  3. Tap Wireless & networks
  4. Tap Mobile networks
  5. Check that Data roaming does not have a tick next to it, if it has a tick, tap it to remove.

To switch on your data connection whilst aboard,

  1. Press the Menu key
  2. Tap Settings
  3. Tap Wireless & networks
  4. Tap Mobile networks
  5. Tap Data roaming
  6. Tap OK to the message Allow data roaming? You may incur significant roaming charges!
  7. A tick will now appear next to this option.


 

Email - How do I setup/sign into a Googlemail account from my phone?

You'll need to setup/sign in to a Googlemail account to be able to use the Market Place Store to download Apps.

  1. Tap the Main menu icon
  2. Tap Market
  3. Tap Next on the Set up your Google account page

To setup a new account,

  1. Tap Create
  2. Tap the First name text box and enter your first name
  3. Tap the Last name text box and enter your last name
  4. Tap the Username text box and enter a username that will then become your e-mail address
  5. Tap Return twice
  6. Tap Next
  7. The phone will now connect to the network to see if the emial address is OK
  8. Tap the Type a password text box and enter a password for your account
  9. Tap the Confirm password text box and re-enter the password for your account
  10. Tap Return twice
  11. Tap Next
  12. Tap the Security question drop down box and tap a question
  13. Tap the Answer text box and enter your answer
  14. Tap the Secondary Email text box and enter an other e-mail address that is yours
  15. Tap Return twice
  16. Tap Create
  17. Tap I agree, Next to the Google Terms of Service
  18. The phone will now communicate with the google servers and setup the account (this could take up to 5 minutes)
  19. Tap the text box and enter the characters that apear in the box above
  20. Tap Next
  21. Tap Accept to the Android Market Terms of Service
  22. Your account will now be active.

To Sign into you account,

  1. Tap Sign in
  2. Tap the Username text box and enter your account username
  3. Tap the Password text box and enter your account password
  4. Tap Return
  5. Tap Sign in
  6. The phone will now communicate with the google servers and setup the account (this could take up to 5 minutes)
  7. Tap Accept to the Android Market Terms of Service
  8. Your account will now be active.


 

GPS - How do I set up my phones internal GPS and Location services?

Firstly you'll need to set up your location sources,

  1. Press the Menu key
  2. Tap Settings
  3. Tap Location & security
  4. Tap Use GPS satellites, a tick will now appear next to GPS satillites.

Your phone has more ways to find your location quicker than just using GPS alone.

These extra location finders can drain your battery quicker than just using GPS on its own and could also lead to Data usage charges.

To activate these extra location finders,

  1. To use the mobile network and Wi-Fi to find your location, tap Use wireless networks, then tap Agree to the Location consent message, Allow Google's location service to collect anonymous location data. Collections will occur even when no applications are running. A tick will now be next to this option
  2. Press the Back arrow twice to return to the standby screen.

Checking GPS is working

  1. Tap the Main menu icon
  2. Tap Maps
  3. If your GPS is working correctly you should now see a satellite dish icon in the top right hand corner of the screen, next to your network connection icon.

If you're finding it hard to get a signal you may want to try the following,

  • If you're indoors, go outdoors
  • If you're outdoors, move to a more open space
  • Check that your hand does not cover the GPS antenna of your phone (most phone manuals will tell you where this is)
  • Bad weather conditions can affect the signal strength
  • Some vehicles have tinted windows, which may block the satellite signals.


 

Hard Reset - How do I hard reset my phone?

BEFORE COMPLETING A HARD RESET, BACKUP ANYTHING YOU HAVE STORED ON THE HANDSET TO YOUR MEMORY CARD, THIS INCLUDES CONTACTS.

ALSO BE AWARE THAT ALL SETTINGS (MMS, GPRS, EMAIL, ETC) WILL BE REMOVED AND WILL HAVE TO BE RESENT OR RE-ENTERED.

  1. Press the Menu key
  2. Tap Settings
  3. Tap Privacy
  4. Tap Factory data reset
  5. Read the warning then tap Reset phone if you wish to continue
  6. Tap Erase everything
  7. The phone will now reset.

If the reset cannot be performed in the device menu the handset can also be restored to factory defaults like this:

  1. With the phone turned off, press and hold the Volume Button and then briefly press the Power Button. 
  2. Wait for the screen with the three Android images to appear, and then release the Volume Down Button.
  3. Press Volume Down to select Clear Storage, and then press Power.
  4. Press Volume Up to start the factory reset.

Images - How do I improve the picture quality from my phones camera?

Some general tips to help take better pictures are,

  1. The steadier your phone is when taking the picture the better the shot is likely to be, so where possible, rest yourself or the camera on or against something that won’t move.
  2. Take care not to move the phone too soon after you believe the picture has been taken, as there can be a delay between when you press the button and when the shot is taken.
  3. If your phone doesn’t have a built-in flash or light, add additional lighting where you can or outside in natural daylight where appropriate.

Please Note: The numbers of colours a phones screen can display can vary between 16 thousand to 16 million. So you won't see how good or bad your pictures are until you have transferred them to a PC or have had them printed.


 

IMEI - How do I find the IMEI number of my phone?

There are three places to find the IMEI number.

  1. On the box the phone came in.
  2. Underneath the battery in the phone.
  3. Tap Phone and dial *#06#


 

Internet - How do I clear my internet history?

To clear the history,

  1. Tap the Main menu icon
  2. Tap Browser
  3. Press the Menu key
  4. Tap More
  5. Tap Settings
  6. Highlight Clear history and tap, tap OK to the message Your internet navigation history will be deleted.


 

Internet - How do I clear the cache?

To clear the cache,

  1. Tap the Main menu icon
  2. Tap Browser
  3. Press the Menu key
  4. Tap More
  5. Tap Settings
  6. Highlight Clear cache and Tap
  7. Tap OK to the warning Locally cached content and databases will be deleted.


 

Memory - How can I store more ring tones, music and/or pictures?

If you find that you’ve used up the memory in the phone then you can add more memory by purchasing a memory card.  Memory cards vary in shape and memory size so please check the phone’s user guide before purchasing one.  There may be limits to the amount of memory you can add and you’ll need to make sure you order the right type.

Memory - How do I format the memory card?

* Before formating your memory card,  backup anything you have stored on the card using the PC Suite software that came with the phone. This software can also be downloaded from the Sony Ericsson Website *

To format the memory card,

  1. Press the Menu key
  2. Tap Settings
  3. Tap Storage
  4. In the SD card area tap Unmount SD card
  5. Erase SD card will now be lit, Tap
  6. Tap Erase SD card
  7. Tap Erase everything

The changes may not take affect until you restart your phone, once restarted to phone will see the SD card as blank and will ask you format it before use.


 

Messaging - How do I enter/edit the message centre number on my phone?

To save you from having to edit the message centre number when you insert a new SIM, the phone automatically reads the number of your Message Centre Number from your SIM card and this can't be edited.


 

Network - How do I change to manual/automatic network selection?

To change to manual/automatic network selection,

  1. Press the Menu key
  2. Tap Settings
  3. Tap Wireless & networks
  4. Tap Mobile network
  5. Tap Network operators
  6. Tap Search networks
  7. The phone will now search for all available networks in your area
  8. Tap your required network.


 

Network - How do I reset the APNs to their default?

To reset the APNs:

  1. Press the Menu key 
  2. Tap Settings
  3. Tap Wireless & Networks
  4. Tap Mobile networks
  5. Tap Access Point Names
  6. Press the Menu key 
  7. Tap Reset to Default

If this doesn't populate the APN details, then follow the manual GPRS / WAP settings for the handset.


 

Offline Mode - How do I switch Airplane mode on/off?

Airplane mode enables you to switch off the phone part of the mobile.

When in Airplane mode you can not make and receive calls, but you can continue using other parts of the phone like the camera, music player etc.

To switch Airplane mode on,

  1. Press the Menu key
  2. Tap Settings
  3. Tap Wireless & networks
  4. Tap Airplane mode (a tick will appear next to the option and the signal bar will now include a airplane icon)

To switch Airplane mode off,

  1. Press the Menu key
  2. Tap Settings
  3. Tap Wireless & networks
  4. Tap Airplane mode (the tick will disappear next to the option and if you have a SIM PIN you may be asked to enter it)


 

PIN - How do I change the PIN number on my phone?

To change the PIN number on your phone,

  1. Press the Menu key
  2. Tap Settings
  3. Tap Location & Security
  4. Highlight Set up SIM card lock and Tap
  5. Tap Change SIM PIN
  6. Tap the text box to enter your Old PIN and then tap OK
  7. Tap the text box to enter your New PIN and then tap OK
  8. Tap the text box to re-enter your New PIN and then tap OK


 

Software - How do I find the software version of my phone?

To find the software version of your phone.

  1. Press the Menu key
  2. Tap Settings
  3. Tap About phone.


 

Soft Reset - How do I soft reset my phone?

There may be time your phone freezes or runs slowly, this can be sometime be remedied by doing a soft reset,

  1. Ensure that the phone isn't screen locked, if it is, slide the lock icon to the right to unlock   
  2. Press and hold the power button
  3. Tap Power off
  4. Tap OK
  5. Press and hold the power button until the phone vibrates and turns on

If this fails, you may need to take off the back off the phone and remove then reinsert the battery.


 

Voicemail - How do I enter the Voicemail number on my phone?

To find where to enter the Voicemail number your phone,

  1. Press the Menu key
  2. Tap Settings
  3. Tap Call settings
  4. Tap Voicemail settings
  5. Tap Voicemail number
  6. Tap the text box to enter 901 then tap OK.
